I have a great relationship.
It isnt without some real kinks. I am engaged to be married to a man who is committed to my children, to me and to the blossoming of our family and yet I am extremely insecure. I am a card carrying member of team chunk. I am proud of it and being big, soft and beautiful seems to completely fall in line with my dominant personality. I rarely obsess about being skinny or not being able to wear certain clothing because in my mind there is just so much more in life to worry about. Yet, as of late I have been extremely preoccupied with my weight and stature as it relates to my man. I stand at 5, he stands at about 5 and I am sure I have about 90 pounds on him. This obsession has started to affect my esteem and our relationship.
How do I get over the hump of letting what I generally perceive as trivial take over my relationship and possibly destroy the one healthy relationship I have ever experienced?
I dont like for us to take pictures sitting together because the size difference becomes obvious. I cringe at the fact my shoulders are broader than his, I rebuff his compliments and I often chide him for being with me. I often demonize his motives for wanting to share his life with this woman who is three times his size and he is becoming weary of it. I have started to interrogate him about how our wedding pictures are going to look and is he truly proud of being seen with me? I blame his uncomfortableness of showing PDA on the fact that he doesnt want people to think that he is dating a woman who looks like she could be his security detail. And yet the difference in size has had no negative affect on our love making, people who know that we are together have never conspicuously treated us differently or made disparaging remarks and I have not noticed funny looks in public.
Yet, I have become somewhat paranoid and I think this might be more of a commentary on how I truly feel about my weight. Maybe I aint quite as OK with it as I would like everyone to believe. Maybe I shouldnt be team captain for team chunk because I am a fraud. Maybe I am secretly lusting to join Team Thick or maybe even Team Thin.
What I do know is that I better get a grip on this situation very quickly or I just might push away the best man I have ever had, no matter how small.

Listen to the Silence is Stanfords annual Asian American community issues conference organized by the Asian American Students Association (AASA). Listen to the Silence started in 1995 out of the need to increase visibility of Asian American issues and to educate both those in and outside of the community about the real conditions of the Asian American community. The conference goals have since expanded to include the empowerment of Asian American students to take direct action to improve their communities and work towards social justice. This year marks the 13th Anniversary of Listen to the Silence, which will be held on Saturday, January 24th, 2009.
The event attracts hundreds of local high school students, college students from around the nation, and community activists throughout California. The conference will consist of a series of workshops aimed at educating participants on community issues, building organizing skills, and facilitating connections between activists and students to fight for progressive social change.
Each year Listen to the Silence is followed by an exciting evening concert featuring Asian American hip-hop, spoken word, and other talented artists. We prioritize bringing Asian American performers to Listen to the Silence because we believe that those from the community—those directly affected—are best able to express the experiences and conditions of Asian America. These artists stand in solidarity with the vision of this conference and believe that Asian Americans must get active in the Movement for social change. Our voices need and must be heard.

After this crummy week for American capitalism, people might be in the mood for the wide-open spaces and stripped-down narrative objectives of director Ed Harris Its less a western than a loping buddy picture, based on Robert B. Parkers novel, that happens to be set in the territory of New Mexico, 1882.

Harris plays Virgil Cole, whose friend and backup, Everett Hitch, is portrayed by Viggo Mortensen. Theyre guns for hire, in the peacekeeping bidness. A ruthless rancher ( Jeremy Irons, cast against type and hidden behind a full set of whiskers) effectively runs the town of Appaloosa as he pleases, killing off the marshal when it best suits him, going about his business. Enter Cole and Hitch. Orders restored, uneasily, until the appearance of piano player and hot-to-trot widow Allison French. Shes played by Renee Zellweger, and as this coy bundle of availability squeezes into Coles life, she keeps a side door open for whoever else tickles her fancy.

While has its share of revenge killings, theres a fair amount of leisurely conversation between Cole and Hitch as they regard their newfound town and sort through the mysteries of life, women and a universe where a lout like Irons rancher can start out a lawless varmint and turn into a respectable man of business. Harris co-wrote the screenplay with Robert Knott, and while the storys locale is meant to be dusty and sparsely populated, it is not, I think, meant to be as two-dimensionally fakey as it seems on screen. I admired Harris directorial debut, and I enjoyed much of but Harris has yet to figure out how to energize a scene visually. Hes not going for anything fancy, but his compositions are more functional than compelling.

Mortensen comes off best. Not only does he seem like a genuine artifact of the late 19th Century, his plain-spoken charisma is well-suited to the western genre. Irons is effective as well, even with a wobbly dialect, and unlike so many frontier adversaries, this one becomes more interesting and dangerously respectable as winds its way to the close. In the end what you have is a mixed bag. The conception of the Zellweger character seems way off, as written and as acted. But with or without that fantastic mustache, Mortensen should certainly do another western, soon. Preferably he should do one with a real sense of danger to go along with all the neat, tidy, highfalutin honor and decency.
