Scouting For Girls

  • Oct. 12th, 2008 at 1:50 AM

Just as one fight ended, it kicked off again further down the row of buildings. The problems at Sunshine Park are the dance floor and late licence at the bowling complex. As I stood in the downpour holding on to ‘the male in the striped shirt with blood on his face’ I couldn’t hear my radio due to the immense noise of Scouting For Girls coming from the complex.
This person is about 19 years old and keeps calling me ‘geezer’ and asking for my opinion on the validity of his actions. He keeps shrugging his shoulders in his deep hoodie and moving around, imitating a prize fighter’s dance on the way to the ring.
What would you have done geezer?
It aint right is it!
Everyone has a few beers innit geezer
I stare at him. What is this language he is speaking? He tries to enlist my support again.

Kicking the rural girls

  • Oct. 10th, 2008 at 12:20 PM
To promote football among rural women, three national football coaches are in Eastern Bhutan giving a series of training to students aged 10-15. An official from Bhutan Football federation (BFF) said that the focus is on girls since their rate of participation is lower.
B. B. Tamang, one of the coaches, said that girls in the east are talented but often shy. They lacked training and didn’t come forward in sports and games. The training aims to promote games among them.
He added that the girls could also join the winter coaching camp. The coaches are spending just three days in each school which some teachers felt was too short. But with seven dzonkhags to cover in 81 days, Tamang said that was the most they could manage and they were trying to impart as much skills and training as possible in their limited time.
Games teachers also attend the training and Tamang said he hoped that the teachers would teach them in future what the children weren’t able to learn in the short time now.
Although the team was there to coach and find talent among the girls, boys in all the dzongkhags visited Chukhaalso took advantage. Selected boys also trained for an hour in the morning. Kencho Tsheten, Sports Teacher at Pemagatshel Middle Secondary School said the training was very useful. A lot of new skills were imparted to the students and he felt it was good initiative of BFF.
Students in over 24 schools in Lhuntse, Mongar, Tashiyangtse, Trashigang, Pemagatshel have already trained in basic skills, with the coaches moving to Samdrup Jongkhar. They will visit schools in Bumthang before coming back to the capital on October 21.
The training is undertaken with funding from FIFA.

NORTHERN LIGHTS: THE LOCAL GIRLS

  • Oct. 10th, 2008 at 12:41 AM

By Christina Scannapiego
If anything were to go down on the North Shore, Taira Barron and Alana Mock just wouldn’t be messed with. These are the girls who whose families have been here forever, who are simply part of the country and always will be—they’re the quintessential Hawaiian girls. If you’ve ever seen North Shore, Taira’s the real life Kiani. In fact, on your way to Goat Island, you can see the stables where she rides horses. Her dad’s a well-known North Shore shaper and her entire family is comprised of respected surfers. In the water, Taira rips without even trying.
Similarly, you’ll spot Alana in the ocean on any given day—in fact, you’ll see Alana everywhere on any given day. She’s just one of those familiar faces on the North Shore that everyone knows as she’s running from the beach to school to her dinner shift at Lei Lei’s. “Everybody knows everybody,” she says of her community. “Actually, you have to be careful who you date! Over here, families are so big, you’re bound to be related somehow.” And even though Alana’s thinking about transplanting to the mainland for a little while, the North Shore will always be home for her. “I love it because it’s the country, away from everything. Growing up in that, going to Waikiki was shocking,” she says. “The North Shore has a different mindset. It’s mellow and people have the Aloha spirit. I’d rather be in the country than anywhere else.

No Girls Allowed

  • Oct. 4th, 2008 at 3:23 PM

We were all excited when they were in the same kindergarten class. Okay, most of us were excited. It seems that Landon's Dad figured that now that his son was in school and a "big" boy, it was time to put away the frivolities of youth. Frivolities like playing with girls.
Dad had Landon help him build the coolest, most rocking tree house ever. GuG excitedly watched it go up from her side of the fence. When it was done, Dad painted a great big sign to put on the door. I'm not sure if Landon could read it himself since he'd just started kindergarten, but the message was pretty clear. "NO GIRLS ALLOWED!"
Oh yes he did. In 1990. Between the time that tree house went up and Landon's family moving away a year and a half later, their friendship was never the same. Landon's mom didn't really understand her husband's position, but she wasn't about to buck the system. No, they didn't keep in touch.

Teen Girls Search for Idenity

  • Sep. 14th, 2008 at 2:03 PM
Last night I ventured into the local Blockbuster with my wife to check out the latest action packed thriller. As I stood in line I became pretty disturbed. Being in youth ministry there is not much I havent seen, and am quit aware of the reality that our teens are living in. In front of me stood at different places in line some teenage girls, all were barley dressed and unaware that their presentation of themselves was drawing the attention of many guys in the store. There is something wrong with our teen girls. They are getting too sexy and way too aggressive towards guys. I grew up in a generation where guys were the pursuers, but something has switched. Teen girls are now the aggressors and many guys do not know how to respond. What has happened to our teenage girls’ innocence?  In the teen culture sexuality is growing to be a hot topic. A day does not pass by without a new teen media figure flaunting herself in sexually provocative ways. Miley Cyrus, 15, semi-naked! Jamie Lynn Spears, 16, pregnant! A bunch of Massachusetts high schoolers all having babies together! Its an epidemic. Once the idea has taken hold, its hard to shake off, and the fact that the presidential campaign features a pregnant 17-year-old means that the debate about teenage sexuality is growing only more heated. –“The Truth about Teens” Time Magazine
A recent article has been published by Time Magazine titled, The Truth About Teen Girls. The article hits on the reality that our girls are shaped by the media that they watch, this is no new reality. For years the discussion has been had about how media alters a girls self perception and self esteem. The alarming thing about this trend is that it is trickling down to younger and younger girls. We are seeing pre-teen girls copying their older counterparts. But is the media the primary culprit that is influencing our girls’ perception of themselves or is there something beneath the surface?
Do not be deceived teens can tell reality from fiction, they know the stuff they see on T.V is not real, and often media is not the primary influence of these changed perceptions of self that result in a more risqué behavior by teen girls. The truth is our Teenage girls are looking for identity. The teenage years are marked by a new self awareness of themselves and how they fit into the world around them. Teens are trying on many different identitys to see which one fits them the best in this new world they are experiencing. Often girls do not want to be these characters in the media they simply want to try on that identity. The problem is when the media unanimously suggest hotness is the only identity worth trying on.
So what do we do in response to this old but new problem with our teen girls? Seeking an identity in the teen years is a natural part of adolescent development. When we hinder that search we do more damage in the parent child relationship, and often communication breaks down. However, most teen girls do no know what is best for them in how they process these new realities and try on new identities. The problem occurs when teenage girls are left by themselves to discover who they are and how they fit into their world. The result, teen girls have no filter or boundaries to operate by as they venture into this new area of life, making every identity and behavior open for them to test and try on. Our teen girls need loving women to walk along side them who have experienced this season of life, offering teen girls identities that foster an image of value and self respect. There needs to be a balance where the parents guide and direct their teens search for identify in a way that is healthy and God honoring, but also giving their teen the ability have some freedom in figuring out how they are designed.

Review and Giveaway: Precious Girls Club

  • Sep. 12th, 2008 at 5:21 AM
We received a copy of the first book in the series to review. I immediately loved the easy-to-read type, and the full color illustrations in the book. So did my 5-year-old - who although is reading chapter books on her own now, still prefers pictures to go along with the story as well. She flew through the nine chapters of the book but for days was coming to me and pointing out her newest favorite pictures from it. Both she and her older sister have read and re-read it several times now and are already asking when another book in the series will be available.
I read the book as well, both to see what my girls are reading, as well as to be able to properly review it.  I thought that the storyline is extremely appropriate for young kids, and the issues dealt with (starting a new school, making new friends, having faith) are well presented, relevant to kids own lives today, and exactly what Im comfortable having my girls reading. The book is very obviously written from a faith and inspirational perspective and Christian viewpoint, but doesnt come across as and I think that girls of any religious background would relate to the story and the characters.
My girls and I are anxiously awaiting the launch of the Precious Girls Club website later this month and will definitely be checking it out. It helps to set my mind at ease to know that the site will not only be fun for my kids, but also safe for them to be on as well.

The Girls Guide to Football: Oakland Raiders

  • Sep. 11th, 2008 at 12:24 PM

In our ongoing, grasping, and altogether desperate attempt to convert the SportSquee faithful into football fans, we're presenting a handy-dandy guide to the NFL. We're here to help you decide what team you should be rooting for and just who you should choose to be your football boyfriend. Careful study of our Girls Guide will bolster your street cred with fellow sports fans and your Personal Athlete Fantasy File.

Team: Oakland Raiders Division: AFC West
Notoriety: Were once the drinkingest, fightingest, druggingest bunch of hooligans in the NFL. Huggy Bear's son is their 1A running back.
Quarterback(s): JaMarcus Russell, some dudes who are not JaMarcus Russell

Why You Should Root For Them: The Raiders are on the edge of greatness. They have two of the most highly-touted young players to come along in years. Sophomore JaMarcus Russell has been hyped as the most dynamic young QB to come along in years. This is mostly due to the Sugar Bowl, in which he almost single-handedly enslaved Notre Dame. Also highly-touted is rookie Darren McFadden, known around these parts as the Astroturf Ovechkin. McFadden is a total freak of nature, the rare running back who enjoys running over people with stunning bloodlust and can run so fast that all he needs is a flux capacitor to travel back to 1955. Additionally, Justin Fargas, the Raiders top running back is the sone of Antonio Fargas, the original Huggy Bear on Starsky and Hutch. You guys, that's awesome. Plus, the Raiders can coast for a while on their history of being an on-field biker gang during the 70's and their success under John Madden. Who was once a coach before he was a video game. And both Sloth from Goonies and Bo Jackson were Raiders, so that is a lot of good credit right there. If you're handy with a blade and aren't allergic to silver makeup, then you can be a Raiders fan.

Why You Shouldn't Root For Them: Unfortch, the Raiders are perpetually the most inexplicably bad team in the NFL. If you dissect their roster, you'll find a lot of very good players. And yet, it never seems to gel for Oakland. Even when they do the right thing, such as not rush JaMarcus Russell into the starting role, it still doesn't work out. Plus, if you aren't comfortable with occasional cannibalism and have never killed anyone, you probably won't be able to hang with Raiders fans.

Potential Boyfriends: Justin Fargas, obvi.

Ashton Kutcher Launches Blah Girls

  • Sep. 10th, 2008 at 9:54 PM
Debuting at TechCrunch 50 is new gossip site dubbed Blah Girls. The site is owned by Holywood Actor Ashton Kutcher. And as such, the expectations for the site are pretty much high. But playing game and all, Kutcher played it like a true Silicon Valley startup developer and even presented Blah Girls infront of a panel of judges, one of them was Googles Marissa Meyer.Blah Girls features a group of animated teenage girls who give opinion on whats going on in the entertainment world. Yes, we kind of expect that, knowing that Kutcher is behind the site and blah being synonymous to gossip. Blah Girls is basically a video animation of three cartoon girls. You might think of them as the Powerfuff Girls of entertainment news invading the online video world. Yeah, thats probably the simplest way to describe what Blah Girls is all about.
The Blah Girls will deliver up to date celeb trends and news in a witty manner. The video will be updated regularly as well. But, whereas the Powerpuff girls was aimed at kids, Blah Girls is not.
For the social networking part of Blah Girls, users can create an account and login to the site to comment on a particular video episode. Blah Girls, the site will then send you an email with a URL to the sites comment response page. In addition, you can also ask the Blah Girls for gossip advice although we doubt if you can get a pretty sensible answer from those Girls. But anyway, the site was not meant to be serios anyway. In fact, I think of it as satire hitting on the mad entertainment world.
From the words of Ashton Kutcher, Blah Girls core will be on creating high quality content, will focus on interactivity and social engagement for retention as its advertising model, and a seamless integrated branded content.
While visiting the site, I must admit find it pretty well cooked up. Although the video content is its major product, other elements of a good web 2.0 site is also present. The site design is catchy and really emits a sense of fun, satire, fun and satire.
Its too early to tell if the Blah Girls video will reach a certain level of virality achieved by famous user-generated video content in YouTube. But who knows, it might actually pull one through. One things for sure, it was a pretty good domain and site name.

What Do Girls Want

  • Sep. 10th, 2008 at 2:48 AM

Theyll NEED to have you.
Thats why some guys have so many girls calling them.
Thats why the get all the girls.
Thats why girls will go with the jerk (among other things). Its just that hes more fun to them because they break the social norm and are unpredictable.
So does this mean you have to be a jerk? No way! Just be unpredictable. Dont do it for her, do it for YOURSELF! Being unpredictable is fun and not only will she enjoy it, but you will as well. Make it a point to do things you havent done before. Force yourself to do random things that you dont even expect yourself to do. Dont think about it just do it.
When youre talking to a girl, if youre just like every single other guy, then youll be forgettable. No really, even if you make her laugh and things seem to be going well, unless you can stand out, then theres no reason for her to remember you longer than the next guy.
Im a big advocate of being genuine, and one of the best things you can do for yourself and for your potential girl is to create an exciting life. If youre staying at home all the time, working your 9-5 jobs, then figure out how to spice up your life quickly! Otherwise, youll wake up at 50 wondering where your life went. Instead, take unexpected decisions in your life and build up the exciting part of yourself.
Really, even though girls can want a million things, they all crave a little excitement from time to time.
