Nintendo DSi to be Region Locked

  • Oct. 8th, 2008 at 11:35 PM
The upcoming DSi will be the first Nintendo portable system that will carry software restrictions according to region. “DSi software (software that is only compatible with DSi) is region locked, eg: European DSi software can only be played on European DSi consoles,” a Nintendo spokesperson told CVG.
To clarify, only software that is created specifically for the DSi will be region locked. This will include both download and cartridge-based games. Nintendo DS and Game Boy Advance games, however, will continue to be region-free.
Why would Nintendo change what appears to already be a winning system? The spokesperson explained, “DSi is region locked because DSi embeds net communication functionality within itself and we are intending to provide net services specifically tailored for each region. Also because we are including parental control functionality for Nintendo DSi and each region has its unique age limit made by different independent.

Nintendo has confirmed that both downloadable games and DSi-exclusive software will be region-locked, meaning Japanese games won't play on an American DSi and vice versa. Regular DS games, on the other hand, will continue to be universal, and you'll still be able to play Japanense imports of regular DS games on say, an American DSi. That sucks, because it means if you import a DSi from Japan to skip the longass wait for the US version, you're going to be stuck buying Japanese DSi games forever, not to mention killing the import market. Maybe there's hope yet lurking in that SD card slot though.

Yep, it has two touch screens unlike the older DS systems.

That's why a lot of Nintendo fans are bitching about the lack of a real hardware update. If they're going to go ahead and update the hardware to have two cameras, an extra touchscreen, and bigger screens, why didn't they just revamp the graphics as well and make a new console that was backwards compatible. I think that's what most people are angry about. The DS is starting to get old (considering how long Nintendo's handhelds usually last). It's honestly time to smell the coffee and realize they are going to be left in the dust here soon by Apple and at least in Japan, Sony, if they don't get their act together.

I think Nintendo (as much as I love them) is very much like Sony. Nintendo thinks they have the handheld market in the bag no matter what they pull, just as Sony thought they had consoles in the bag for good because they had such a large user base. One trip up has shown that can all change quite quickly. Nintendo needs to stop pretending it has no competition by not "competing with anyone".

The Nintendo Wii is approaching its third holiday season and it might be a hottest seller yet again. The last two years, the supply wasnt enough to meet consumer demand but Nintendo is saying this year will be different with a significant increase of in-store Wiis. Still, its hard to say if the $249 device will be the overnight line-inducing, must have product that it was in the past. Has the Wiis novelty worn off yet or is it going to be a Wii Sports Christmas morning for many children again this year?
Edit: Changed the headline. Is that not the greatest Wii portmanteau of all time.
